Chapter Five
After a long, hot shower, Cas emerged from the steamy bathroom no closer to finding answers than when he’d gone in. Joey had set the small table with plates, silverware, glasses and a large pan of tamales—still wrapped in their husks. The scene was too domestic for Cas’s peace of mind.
“Thanks but I’m not hungry. I’ll go walk the perimeter,” Cas said without looking at Joey.
“Can I go with you?” Joey asked.
With his hand on the knob, Cas briefly leaned his forehead against the outside door. “That would be pretty pointless, don’t you think? I’m doing this to keep you safe.”
Before Joey could say anything more, Cas unlocked the door, threw it open then stepped out into the fading sunlight. He dug the keys to the shed out of his pocket and entered the darkened interior. By feel, he selected a twelve-gauge double-barreled shotgun before setting out to the pasture.
Cas was intent on making a wide circle around the cabin. In his gut, he knew he wouldn’t find anything, but it was safer than being trapped in the small house with Joey.
Ray’s words still lay heavily on his mind and heart. He didn’t believe he was in love with Joey, but he had to admit that when he’d come out of the bathroom to the domestic scene in the kitchen, his heart had swelled just a bit. What would it be like to open up to something more than a casual fling?
Joey was young, too young to settle down, and Cas knew it.
“Fuck!” Cas spat. Why the hell was he even worried about what could be when he didn’t even know if Joey was interested in anything but a hard, slap-around fuck.

Night had fallen by the time the front door opened. Joey glanced up from his spot in the middle of the large bed, gold coins strewn around him. “Did you see anyone?”
“No.” Cas removed two shells from the shotgun before leaning it in the corner of the room. He narrowed his eyes when he took in the scene. “What’re you doing?”
Joey took a deep breath. He’d done a lot of thinking after Cas had left and had come to several conclusions. Number one, he’d grown accustomed to Cas being at his side, and number two, he no longer cared to be the holder of the Lo Russo or the Barbati secrets.
Reaching down, Joey ran his fingers through the heavy gold coins. “We could take this and disappear.”
Cas moved across the room to join Joey on the mattress. “Running isn’t the answer.”
“I know.” Joey began to scoop the coins back into the pewter bank. “It’s a nice dream though.”
“Is it?” Cas started to reach for Joey but pulled back before he made contact. “Would you give up everything you know to disappear with me?”
Joey didn’t even need to consider the offer. “Absolutely.” He bit his bottom lip. Had he shown his hand too soon? “I have a fortune in the bank that I haven’t touched since I bought the RV, but other than that, I’ve got nothing.
